The Orange Giraffe Project is a developing organization providing a free, non-medical, public service program created for the purpose of strengthening the spirits and confidence of women living with cancer through jewelry design.
There are many cancer support programs for women who deal with changing bodies. Some are focused on hair, make-up, nails, weight-loss, etc. Other programs offer free art classes. The Orange Giraffe Project believes that the creative process is a way to heal for anyone. Thus, we invite participants, free of worry of their previous design experience, fine motor skills, and artistic abilities as they are paired with veterans of the jewelry design field, who will help make their visions come to life.
We believe that the design process is beneficial in multiple ways:
- It serves as a form of art therapy. As the Creative Center believes, "while medicine may cure the body over time, art heals the spirit." Participants may choose to make their piece directly related to their cancer journey or the creative inspiration may be free from the struggles of their cancer journey. Either way, while participants develop the concepts behind their design, they will reflect upon their development, abilities, personality, interests, concerns, and conflicts, and this will help foster self-awareness, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.
- Its interactive nature nurtures individuality through creative expression. Each participant engages in the creative process and in doing so becomes empowered to no longer focus on their condition, but reveal her personality again. While we provide jewelry designers of a variety of styles, emphasis is placed on the participants cultivating their own uniqueness and distinct style.
-
The jewelry created may serve as an aesthetic option besides wigs and scarves, which stimulates confidence in changing appearance for the participants.
Overall, our program is about providing an outlet which can remind our participants of their strength, worth, and ability. Yet, our workshops are just the beginning. While we promote the expression of beauty while healing, we also hope to share the inspiration and artwork of our participants with the goal of raising cancer awareness in others and in hopes of helping women around the world stand tall, together.
